How to Crochet a Star Applique
I can’t believe July 4 is fast approaching. I love this time of year with picnics, fireworks and community festivities. Since I needed some stars for a project, I figured I may as well make a tutorial. So here’s how to crochet a star applique.
The star I made is approximately 2.5 inches across. It’s a perfect applique for a bag, hair clip, cup cozy, basket, pillow or attach one to a hair clip. You could also string them as a garland or attach them to pennants. These crochet stars are actually very easy to make. And, they are quick to make, too! You need to know basic stitches such as chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet. Knowing the magic ring is great for this BUT you can use a chain circle if you don’t know the magic ring.
I used worsted weight (number 4), cotton yarn. You could acrylic as well. I love cotton yarn for summer and I have a specific plan for these star appliques. You could also use different yarn weights. I just recommend that you use the hook suggested for the yarn weight. Just keep in mind if you change the weight of the yarn, the size of star will be affected. A lighter weight of yarn will result in a smaller star; while a heavier weight will result in a larger star.

Pattern and Tutorial
Step 1: In a magic ring, make 10 SC. If you don’t want to make a magic ring, use the alternative method below.
Step 1 Alternative Method: Ch 3. Join with Sl St to make a circle. Ch 1. Make 10 SC in circle.
Step 2: Join to first SC using a Sl St. (10 stitches)
Step 3: Chain 4.
Step 4: In 2nd chain from hook, make 1 SC. In next chain, make 1 HDC. In next chain, make 1 DC.
Step 5: Skip 1 single crochet on the circle and SS into the next stitch.
Repeat steps 3 – 5 until you have five spokes to your star.
Fasten off. You will need to weave in your ends. I always weave in my magic ring tail. Leave a long tail if you wish to stitch your applique to another crocheted item. If you are applying the applique to fabric, use regular thread to sew it on.
